The Nuristani people are consisted of nine groups – the
Ashkuni-Wamayi, Bashgali-Kati, Grangali, Kamviri,
Malakhel, Waigeli, Prasuni, Tregami and Urmuri with a
population between 120,000 to 250,000. Most Nuristanis make a living off of
farming and herding, but some who live in difficult regions work by logging or
working in illicit gem mining enterprises. When dealing with marriage the age
groups differ. With women it is 20, for men it is 25. Marriage between first
cousins is forbidden. A brides price is payed in cattle but if the groom cannot
pay in full, he is allowed to work for the bride's family to satisfy the
remainder.
