The Turkmens live along the southern side of Amu
Darya. Most Turkmans herd yaks and are known to be
nomadic. Traditional Turkmen attire is supple leather
boots, belted tunics, long-sleeved coats and Persian lamb hats. In the more urban areas
they wear neat suits, a crisp tie and polished shoes. Women wear long colorful, floral-
patterned dresses over leggings and covering of the face isn't customary. When a man
and a women marry the bride's family compensates the groom's family with a small sum
for raising him to manhood. After marriage immediate pregnancy is expected. If they
cannot conceive then it can lead to divorce.
