Populating around 4.5 million, the Tajiks are the second largest ethnic group in Afghanistan. The Tajik inhabit the Panjsher Valley north of Kabul and in the northern and northeastern provinces of Parwan, Takhar, Badakshan , Baghlan and Samangan. Very few Tajiks ever live in the central mountains of Afghanistan, with many speaking the Dari Persian language. Unlike the Pashtuns the Tajik are not separated into tribes. They refer to themselves with the region or valley that they live in. Many Tajiks are farmers who farm mostly of fine fruits and nuts, and they are also goat herders.
